"Uncle Sam’s Bash" on July 4 2004 starred the Goo Goo Dolls and Robe Show Lighting fixtures. It was staged in Niagara Square front of the beguiling 1920s City Hall in downtown Buffalo, and attended by approximately 25,000 people.

The show was filmed in hi def for a DVD, released in late 2004. The Square was a very challenging site, due to assorted obstructions, street furniture, city hall railings, etc., some of which had to be removed. Traffic was rerouted for 6 days, but the city of Buffalo was generally very accommodating all round.

Lighting was provided by a combination of PRG New Jersey, and North Eastern Productions from Rochester, who supplied the roof and all conventionals as well as some automated lighting. The show was designed by Donny LoDico, and programmed by Craig Casserta both of whom also operated, using a Hog II console with three overdrives.

LoDico was working directly for the band.

“It was a real pleasure to come back to the camp and work on something of this scale in my home town

” he says. It had been a long term personal ambition to light the City Hall, and to have the opportunity to light both the building as a backdrop and shoot a DVD with the Goo Goos simultaneously was an excellent experience.

A wide variety of lighting equipment was utilised for the show, including Robe ColorSpot 1200 ATs, which were used to produce some funky texturing onto the building.

We chose the Robe 1200s because the light output is really good, and because the standard gobos are excellent – much better than other moving lights” says LoDico“The zoom is awesome, and the colour mixing is very nice.

On the day, the skies opened, drenching everyone one and everything in grand style ... but the last fixtures standing and still working … were the Robes - Once again proving themselves to be a top fixture for all types of weather extremity.

Apart from their resistance to rain, LoDico really likes the Robe beam effects and the gobos, which he says are“

He also thinks the ease of changing gobos, the brightness of the fixture and the pan/tilt speed are great, and as far as putting a top quality light together,“

I think Robe’s RnD team has taken all the good things out of the various lights we’ve been using over the last few years, and finally combined them in one great package”
