Tiësto – for three consecutive years voted the World’s Best DJ by DJ Magazine – had his recent show at the 7,000 capacity Marina Santa Aldeia venue in Sao Paolo lit with Robe moving lights. It was part of a Brasilian tour by the Dutch born artist.
Absolute Lighting supplied the equipment to the show, for a design by Welder Rogers, which was programmed and operated by Absolute’s Paulinho.
Absolute is one of Brasil’s leading rental companies, based in Sao Paulo, and supplying lighting, crew and expertise to a whole range of different lighting genres including concerts and touring shows, live venues, television productions and architectural projects.
With one of the largest moving light inventories in the area, they were asked to provide both the moving and generic light specification for the Tiësto show.
The layout was a massive dancefloor with a stage at one end. Rogers’ design featured 24 Robe Wash 575 XTs, 24 Spot 575 XTs and 4 ColorSpot 1200 fixtures. These were positioned all across the roof of the venue, attached to the venue’s permanent trussing structure, with some units also on the stage floor.
Robe was specified because of its speed, rich colour palette, brightness and general robustness of the lights, and also because the units are easy to programme when time is tight … as it was for this show.
Being a high energy all night dance event, the units received a good work out. They were in action constantly for 14 hours, used to produce a myriad of "WOW" effects for the audience, helping Tiësto’s blistering, trancey set come alive with beam and gobo projections and a mind-boggling collage of colours, patterns, movement and suggestion.
The strobe effects and the beam focussing facilities came into their own in creating these effects. It’s difficult to make a dance show look refreshing and non-repetitive for such a long period of time, but with the help of the Robes, Paulinho did an amazing job, using an Avolites Pearl console for control.
Absolute Lighting has over 100 Robe heads – supplied by Robe’s Brasilian distributor Trendy Lighting - and uses them extensively on all its shows.
